probably better to rebuild, unless you can find a cheaper, great known condition one to buy. Yes we rebuild, and we are less expensive than anyone else we have found.

Just out of curiousity... I know it depends on the condition of the tranny, but what is the ballpark range that parts usually costs for a standard rebuild?

All the synchros are about $100. Thats what makes it shift good. Gears are pretty expensive. Usually a couple hundred. Shift forks are around $30. And rails are around $35. Usually those are the most common problems. I just give the tranny a good visual to see whats worn and replace it. Upgrades are pretty expensive ie double synchros and taller gears. You can check out teamrip.com to see what parts go for.

Im getting ready to rebuild my first auto. Time to learn something new.

IllEagleTSI

It will be right around $500 with parts, tax and fluids. Give or take. Thats if the tranny is out already. Depending on the year of the car and drivetrain will determine labor on pulling it out.
