LeMons Houston - Eagle Talon in 2nd Place

Its the end of Day 1 of 24 Hours or LeMons Houston at MSR and an Eagle Talon is in 2nd place with one lap down to the leader with a field of over 120 cars. The car has also set the 3rd fastest lap.

With 2 1/2 hours to go it was in 5th place and when its front brake pads wore out and it was metal on metal. We were not going to stop unless it caught on fire, and changed our driving style to accommodate and were still able to gain 4 positions.

Got to get up early and change out the calipers, rotors, and pads.

    Its been an awesome day!!!

Hopefully I will have pics soon......

They split the race over two days, because the track does not have lights for night driving. We start back at it 9:00 am tomorrow.

    Way to go Ciro!!

We are in the Garages right below the Main Grandstands, 3rd garage. It lines up with the very first part of the fuel pit wall (look for the Lotus Super 7 parked out front), we are right beside them

Great to see a DSM doing well (hopefully I didn't jinx anything). Good luck.

Yes we got jinxed, 3 hours into the second day, after fuel stops we had dropped to 4th and the 5th place car was 7 laps behind us, so if we finished we would have been guaranteed a 4th place or better finish. Our driver set the 3rd fastest lap of the race, only thousands of a second behind the fastest lap, unfortunately the radiator cap started leaking and he overheated the engine, blowing the head gasket. We still finished the day 22nd overall out of 123 cars!

Ciro's team won their class and got a trophy!!!!

It looks like a four cylinder, non boosted engine. From factory the most horsepower the Mirage ever made was 131hp. They are definitely hiding something, because they could not be that fast without having at least 250hp. They are very talented mechanics considering they made the car a mid mounted driver seat car.

They also have Nascar gas fill cans. They beat everyone in fill-ups...

We ended up 16th overall and 1st in class. we would have been 14th or 15th but they black flagged us in the last 40 minutes of the race and we got hit by the number 2nd place car, the mach 5. That knocked a plug of the distributor so we finished the last 40 minutes on 3 cylinders.

I did not install it, it was too late at night and there were too many mosquito's. I got it as backup in case the other one came apart. It continued to make lots of metal powder on the magnet and dirty the oil, but we had other things we wanted to contend with, mostly getting our front brakes back to working, and take care of the important stuff like changing the oil, and checking the coolant level.

We believe our misfortune can be attributed to not putting the cap back on correctly. Our thinking is that the tabs on the cap got slightly tweaked (over the past year) because we did not push down and twist, we just engaged it and let the cap ride on tabs as we twisted. Our driver at the time said he never had a warning. (which was BS) The car is equipped with gauges, a huge idiot light, and you could see where the water from the radiator cap was coming out the hood hole (that I cut to let turbo heat out) and ran right up the hood to the windshield, where you could see the streaks from where he was running the wipers.

i agree with diagnosis and believe the cap was the culprit. easy fix though, get it back up and running with a new head. also i do not like to let the coolant get over 212, if you can get a gauge sensor that sets off the light at that temp, on a 1g that is.
