Race Gas to Methanol
Ok, so one of the few pluses of being in Cali was the ease of acces and cheap cost of 100 oct unleaded. You could find a VP station almost anywhere. Now that I'm back home I cant find it without having to travel across town. Once I finally found some stations, the prices are just rediculous.
Now for the Pros of bein back home.. METH! Meth is half the price than Cali! It would normally cost me about $45 for a 5 gallon container. I can get it for $4 a gallon at the first place I looked. The price of the Meth kit I want (Alchycontrol) cost as much as getting 5 gallons of race gas 10 different times from here. So the hell with it. Meth, here I come! However, Meth is something I have hardly messed with in tuning. I have a good idea on what I'm doing, but I'm not too sure how crazy I can get with it. If anyone has some tips, please let me know. The only difficult parts for me are to drill the holes to mount the pump, tap the top mount intercooler, and drill some holes in the stock washer tank. The wiring should be pretty straitforward as long as I re-read Haltechs wiring diagram. I'm sticking with the 1 gallon washer tank until I can get a spec-c tank that holds 3 gallons and mounts behind the rear seats in the trunk. If anyone is down to help me tackle the tapping and drilling parts, I'd be willing to show up with some beer and a smile. |

Ok, got the kit in and did some street tuning. After doing the best I could I rented the dyno at Secret Service Auto for an hour and upped the timing. I started to get too much break up after 6500 with like 1-3 hp increase the last time I added timing. So I pulled that timing back to where it was and the break up was still there, just after 7k (it shows on the dyno chart). I think it was the spark plugs. I got some new ones, gapped them to .027 down from .032-.033. I will see how they do later tonight.
In the end I made 317hp and 322tq on their mustang dyno. I'm really pleased because this is the power area I was looking forward to. I previously made about 300hp and 270tq on HB Speeds dyno in Cali on 91 oct and the same turbo. I know they look close, but the dyno they use reads higher than mustang dyno. I cant wait to get out and lay down some numbers on the track. My best time in Cali was a 13.0 with cracked heads and a slipping clutch. |

What was your afr and what kind of timing where you set at? I would also start with spark plugs to see if it clears that problem up. I two redlines at my house doing the same thing and we popped in some new plugs then problem was solved.

Thank you, I put together a 2.1 stroker for the short time I was in Cali. Its on the STi top mount intercooler, 68HTA FP turbo, 830cc injectors, Alkycontrol methanol kit with an M15 nozzle and a Haltech. Theres a bunch more done, but thats the basics.

Its been fun for the most part. Frustrating to say the least. I have always had a base map or something better to start with. This time I had nothing and really had to thing about what I was doing. But its the first standalone ecu I have touched and I think I'm doin alright.

I had it on the street for 3rd gear pulls it was doing 10.9-11.1. I rather run a bit more rich since I'm ok with the power it makes now. I wouldnt know what to do if I broke the motor after the time I put into it. The wierd thing is my afrs dont stay constant. Some times they creep up to 11.5 even in higher gears on the street. I thought it was a bit normal if it was just second or first to go up, but it seems to fluctuate randomly by small amounts. Changed the spark plugs with new ones all gapped to .027 and am still getting the issue after 7,000. Its not always in the same spot either, most of the time it is after 7,300 and my hardcut rev limit is set for 7,500. I'm starting to wonder if the Hatech is getting a small voltage spike or something to make it hit the cut a bit early or think that its hitting 7,500 before its there. Its not really in my normal range of playing with the car, I just have the extra 500 rpm for room for mistakes. |
